POLICE have charged a man over a fire that burnt through 168 hectares of bushland and damaged a home south of Perth over the weekend.

Emergency services were called to reports of a bushfire on South West Highway and Willinge Drive in Picton at around 1.30pm on Saturday.

Due to bad weather conditions, the fire quickly spread, causing significant damage.

It is alleged the man was smoking in bushland near Temple Road when he flicked his lit cigarette into scrub, which started a small fire.

Police say the man attempted to extinguish the fire but it grew out of control, before running to a nearby service station and reporting the fire.

The 23-year-old has been charged with breach duty of care – duty to a person in control of ignition source of fire.

He will face court today.
